A Diagnostic Value of MRI Patterns in Cervical Spondylosis: A Radiological Evaluation of Degenerative Cervical Spine Changes Diagnostic Value of MRI Patterns in Cervical Spondylosis
Abstract
Background: Cervical spondylosis is a typical degenerative illness comprising of the intervertebral disks, the vertebral bodies, facet joint and ligaments, which in majority of cases creates canal stenosis and neural compression. The commonest age group is between 40 59 years old, the illness is commonly multilevel with neck pain and radiculopathy as clinical manifestations.
Methods: A cross-sectional study that included 100 patients (54 males and 46 females, mean age 45.5 years) was carried out in Al-Shaheed Ghazi Al-Hariri Teaching Hospital during the period between May, 2011 to December, 2011. A Siemens Avanto 1.5 Tesla MRI scans system was used to scan the magnetic resonance imaging and SPSS v17 was used to analyse the data.
Results: C5-C6 (81 percent), C6-C7 (50 percent) were the most frequent levels affected by the cervical cases. There was multilevel participation in 87 percent of patients. The presented MRI results majorly showed decreased disc signals (96%), thecal sac indentation (81%), decreased disc height (65%), osteophytes (62%), and bulging discs (42%). There were primarily neck pain in the context of arms and shoulders (47%).
Conclusion: MRI has a high efficiency of providing diagnosis on the spondylosis of the cervical region and its complications. It gives critical information that relates to clinical symptoms, especially multiple levels degenerative processes. These results highlight the significance of MRI in the early diagnosis and treatment planning.
