Abstract
Background:Irritablebowelsyndromeisamulti-factorialfunctionalgastrointestinaldisorderinwhichabdominalpainandchangeinfrequencyandconsistencyofstoolaresymptomsofIBS(butnotspecific)thisdisorderappeartobecommoninthethirdworld.Aim:toshedlightonprevalenceofIBSamongmedicalstudentsandtoassesstheriskfactors.Methodology:AcrosssectionalstudywasconductedatacollegeofmedicineinBaghdad,thestudywasdoneonconvenientsampleofstudents,bothmaleandfemale.ToachievethisstudyaquestionnaireformwasdesignedaccordingtoRome’sIIIcrite-ria,andquestionsregardinglifestyle.Excelwasusedfordataentryandpresentation,Chisquaretestforriskassessment.Result:TheprevalenceofIBSamong300medicalstudentswas20%.FemalesexwassignificantlyassociatedwithIBS.Conclusion:Onefifthofmedicalstudentssufferfromirritablebowelsyndromewithfemalesweremorelikelytodevelopit
